The Balancing Act: Safety, Security and Privacy

Tuesday, June 11, 2024 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM   iCalendar Central Standard Time

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
In 2023, the Transportation Security Administration confiscated almost 7,000 firearms at airport security checkpoints. Last year, a health system in Ohio confiscated 30,000 weapons! This begs the question: How do hospitals balance the safety, security and privacy of patients, visitors and their workforce? This session will discuss the emergence of increased and innovative security measures in hospitals to address the recent uptick in violent incidents at health care facilities. The session will also provide insight into trends and discuss legal and compliance issues.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Describe the emergence of weapons detectors and other security measures.
  • Discuss expectations for patients, staff and visitors.
  • Identify regulatory and compliance issues, including EMTALA and HIPAA.

SPEAKERS
Michael Chase is a partner in the health care section at Baird Holm. Chase advises clients on federal and state regulatory matters, including federal health care fraud and abuse laws, physician contracts, compliance programs, and HIPAA and institutional review board compliance.

Kristin Lindgren is a member of Baird Holm’s health care practice group. Lindgren helps health care entities with all aspects of health care law, including regulatory, compliance, transactional and HIPAA matters. Before joining the firm, she worked in health care administration and became familiar with the inner workings of large health systems.
