ICD- 10-CM Coding for Social Determinants of Health

Thursday, September 28, 2023 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM   iCalendar Central Standard Time

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Addressing social determinants of health positively affects both the patient and the health care system by:

  •  Achieving health equity.
  •  Improving patient outcomes.
  •  Reducing unnecessary expenditures such as hospital readmission, length of stay and use of post-acute care.

The ICD-10-CM codes included in categories Z55-Z65 and Z75 (Z codes) identify nonmedical factors that may influence a patient’s health status such as the patient’s socioeconomic situation, including:

  • Education and literacy.
  • Employment.
  • Housing.
  •  Lack of adequate food or water.
  • Occupational exposure to risk factors like dust, radiation or toxic agents.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  •  Discuss how to correctly report the key conditions that affect patients and their social needs.
  • Identify how assessing and addressing social determinants of health is critical to improving the patient’s health.
  • Outline the factors affecting social determinants of health and how to capture information for coding and reporting.

INTENDED AUDIENCE

  • Coding professionals.

SPEAKER
Jean Ann Hartzell-Minzey, RHIA, CHA, CPC, is CEO and chair of the board for Healthcare Education Strategies, which develops systems and innovative programs for health care leaders and trainers. Hartzell-Minzey's approach to ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS reflects her clinical and reimbursement methodologies knowledge. She implemented one of the first diagnostic-related group systems in the country while educating 280 members of the medical staff one-on-one. Hartzell-Minzey's sessions not only provide the building blocks to transition to ICD-10 but also help decrease recovery audit contractor exposure.
