Domestically, Dr. Donahue supported and led responses to numerous outbreaks, developed surveillance systems for novel health emergencies and supported local, statewide and public health emergency response efforts. Internationally, he’s worked with patients with HIV and opportunistic infections in South Africa, helped grow a global health program in rural Peru and led response teams during a polio response in Ghana. Dr. Donahue is board-certified in internal medicine, trained through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Epidemic Intelligence Service, holds a certificate of knowledge in clinical tropical medicine and travelers’ health, and is active clinically in refugee health. His scientific publications have been cited more than 2,700 times.Robert Kruse, M.D., MPH, FAAFP, joined Iowa’s Health and Human Services as the state medical director in October 2022. Before this, Dr. Kruse was the medical director of occupational health at MercyOne. He’s board-certified in family medicine and completed his residency training at Rutgers University. Dr. Kruse has a Master of Public Health with a concentration in environmental and occupational health and is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He was an assistant professor at Rutgers University’s Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health in Central New Jersey.
