PROGRAM OVERVIEW The Role of the Leader on the Frontline This two-day workshop is focused on the role of the charge nurse and will benefit those new to the role and with experience. Leadership styles, conflict resolution, effective communication, time management and successful delegation are covered in the program. Though catering to the role of the charge nurse, the workshop also will benefit any nursing leader looking to improve their leadership skills. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES • Analyze practical strategies for managing a leader’s attitude and its influence on staff. • Develop strategies for dealing with difficult behaviors and resolving conflict. • Discover five ways of “being” that are essential to effective leadership. • Discover practical strategies for overcoming stress and building a resistance to it. • Effectively problem solve for challenges facing a charge nurse by using case studies. • Examine why the charge nurse is important in setting a positive tone. • Explore the principles of situational leadership and understand the effect on leadership style. • Identify common behaviors that are difficult for a leader to deal with and the possible intent behind them. • Identify the dynamics of the Leadership Continuum for delegating. • Identify the essential leadership traits for a charge nurse. • Identify ways to form a more reflective practice. • Understand why becoming a better listener and speaker is important to achieving excellence in communication. SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES Jodi Johnson, BSN, RN, is the education manager for Cherokee Regional Medical Center. She is responsible for designing training curriculum promoting professional excellence for clinical roles. Her role ensures federal and state regulatory requirements are met. Johnson has spent nearly 20 years as a bedside nurse for multiple nursing disciplines with a strong passion for critical care and leadership. She is known for patient experience and staff engagement topics focusing on maximizing clinical competency and delivery of high-quality care. She has a working partnership with the University of Iowa nurse residency program and has spoken at national conferences during the transition from graduate nurse to nurse professional. She has 10 years of experience in the design of technology-based learning and competency-based learning. Allison Wild, MSN, RN, PCCN-K, CNE is part of the clinical professional development team at UnityPoint Health-Des Moines, focusing on staff development and education. Through her passion for supporting nursing education for both formal and informal leaders, she developed training for staff nurses, preceptors, charge nurses and other educators. Her background includes working as a staff nurse, preceptor, charge nurse and educator in a progressive care setting. Wild has more than five years of experience in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of adult education.
