Program Agenda 8:00 am Registration 8:15 am Welcome and opening comments 8:30 am IHA Update Chris Mitchell, President and CEO, Iowa Hospital Association, Des Moines In 2021, Chris Mitchell took the helm of the Iowa Hospital Association, which represents 117 hospitals and health systems in the state. Mitchell has been busy meeting with hospital and health system administration to get the pulse on health care in Iowa. He will provide an update on IHA’s 2023 priorities and discuss the impact administrative professionals have on health care in Iowa. Bring your questions! 9:00 am Emotional Intelligence Impact Molly Mackey, MBA, Chief Learning Officer, LEAdeRNship Institute, Jesup Would you rather have a leader that knows more or cares more? Research conducted by Harvard University, the Carnegie Foundation and Stanford Research Center have concluded that 85% of job success comes from having well‐developed soft/ people skills, and only 15% of job success comes from technical skills. This session on Emotional Intelligence will help you dig deep into the required soft skills to be successful. You will walk away with an understanding of emotional intelligence and how to successfully apply it at work. 10:30 am Break 10:45 am Rethinking Organized Chaos: Key Tips for Improved Record Retention and Document Management Practices Shannon M.H. Hasse, Associate, Denton's Davis Brown Law Firm, Des Moines We will discuss state and federal laws and best practices related to record retention and document management. Administrative assistants play an essential role in managing agreements, transactions, and developing organizational policies, often with little direction. This session aims to empower administrative assistants to be good stewards of records and documents and help organizations develop and modernize their record retention policies. Finally, our discussion will include information regarding data privacy and security issues that impact your work. 11:45 am Lunch 12:30 pm IHA Connect Demo Allison Martin, Director, Financial and Member Database Services, Iowa Hospital Association, Des Moines 12:45 pm Small Group Breakout Discussions This session will allow participants to discuss topics specific to their positions and projects. Initial discussion questions will be offered for the groups, however, feel free to bring your own questions. 1:30 pm Time Management Techniques to Help Multiple Leaders Sarah Pavelka, Ph.D., M.H.A, OTR/L, CPHQ, FNAHQ, President and CEO, Pavelka’s Point Consulting, Cedar Falls When you work through your day, do you ever feel as if someone needs time-management techniques? Maybe that someone is you? During this presentation you will learn about easy to adopt time-management techniques to save stress and be productive. We will also discuss how your leadership skills can influence and impact others’ time-management skills. Additionally, we will explore easy tools for meeting management, calendar efficiency, and succinct communication. 3:00 pm Closing comments and adjourn Speakers Shannon M.H. Hasse advises clients on their data privacy and security, real estate, renewable energy, and other corporate business matters. She helps companies of all sizes navigate the often-complicated regulations behind data privacy laws, including GDPR and CCPA, and understand if the regulations apply to them and how to comply and mitigate risk. In her practice, Hasse creates policies, agreements, and plans for implementation to address data privacy and other corporate matters, including record retention and document management practices. She regularly works with clients to craft internal policies and enjoys advising clients on best practices and opportunities to streamline their document management practices. Molly Mackey is the founder and chief learning officer for the LEAdeRNship Institute. Mackey is also the director of knowledge acquisition and transfer at Optimate LifeServices. She received her bachelor’s degree and MBA from the University of Iowa. She is a certified professional of talent development by the Association of Talent Development. Mackey has written two books: “52 Powerful Reflection Questions for Leaders” and “52 Powerful Reflection Questions for Emotionally Intelligent Leaders.” Chris Mitchell started as president and CEO of the Iowa Hospital Association in October 2021. Before joining IHA, he was the executive vice president of advocacy and public affairs for the Michigan Health and Hospital Association in. Mitchell earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Michigan State University and his MBA from the University of Notre Dame, Mendoza College of Business. Sarah Pavelka PhD, has more than 20 years of experience leading and coaching in organizational performance and continuous improvement in business, industry, education and health care. Pavelka is the Academic Program Director for the master of healthcare administration degree at Walden University. She has been a subject matter expert for the National Association for Healthcare, a 13-year faculty member for the master’s in healthcare administration program at Des Moines University, improvement faculty for the Iowa Healthcare Collaborative and Director of the Occupational Therapy Department for Pella Regional Health Center in Pella. Pavelka holds degrees in biology and psychology from Luther College, an occupational therapy degree from Concordia University-Wisconsin, an MHA from Des Moines University and a doctoral degree from Walden University.
